Lovers Lane

It feels so wonderful to be back on Lovers Lane; and who better to introduce you to today than someone who is an inspiration to anyone dreaming of living the life you Love, {and owning it!}

Lovers Lane: Rebecca Thoms Hanley

Meet your new best friend, Rebecca Thoms Hanley. I call her your new best friend because don't we all, at some point in our lives, find that special person with whom you feel "renewed, reformed, and re-envisioned!?" That is Rebecca; and she is also very refreshing!

Rebecca is a handmade designer, bohemian Mama, semi-retired graphic designer, vintage textile Lover, country livin', cocktail lovin', Bananasaurusrex!  Bananasaurusrex is most notable known as the name of her wildly successful vintage up-cycling company that "features astonishing beautiful things for post-modern bohemians - made of amazing vintage, rescued, and ecologically responsible materials." Rebecca is the sole designer and crafter of all the handmade goodies that she sells on Etsy, in boutiques, and at craft and art shows throughout California.

Rebecca took her "fond(ness) for recycling" and Love for vintage textiles, "that time has mostly forgotten," and began creating very useful products that you can "feel good using, wearing, and giving."
Featured in the "Top 50 Etsy Moms of 2010," as well as on many popular blogs, including poppytalk;  Rebecca is recognized for not only her beautiful designs, but for her admirable conscious living lifestyle and infectious free spirited personality.

Bananasaurusrex is full of cleverly titled, recycled, all natural collections; from market bags to snack baggies, to eye pillows and aprons, Rebecca has wonderful gifts for you and for the ones you Love. {Reminder: Mother's Day!}

{strong, flexible, can carry a heavy load, and look good doing it. not unlike Mama herself.}

{super cute, eco friendly, alternative to those expensive plastic bags. save $ and the planet.}

{i'll never be your beast of burden. i can carry everything.}

{who doesn't love lavender scented underpants?}

{if you have ever uttered these words: "isn't the watercress delicious? i have it hydroponically grown by monks." or even if you haven't, you still need a little hostess apron.}

{when you're invited to dinner, do you arrive empty handed? no you do not. your Mama raised you right. certainly you will bring wine. it is the perfect gift. and how will you present this lovely gift?
in vintage wine wrap, of course!}

{perfect for adding a little vintage sweetness to your home.}

Rebecca's titles and descriptions to all of her beautiful, handmade, creations further define her unique and amazing style as an artist. And she is always designing and creating for her shop, so please be sure to stop by often for new pieces.

When I first "met" Rebecca, I wrote to her complimenting her delicious herb infused vodka recipes found here. What I didn't expect in return was a friend when I needed one the most. She simply asked me: "How are you?" Sometimes you don't realize how three simple words can mean so very much. So, thank you Rebecca! For not only being an inspiration, but for being a friend.

Here are 10 other "reasons" why Rebecca Thoms Hanley is your new best friend and one super cool chic helping to save the Earth one up cycled creation at a time.

1. Where do you find your daily inspiration? I work primarily with vintage textiles so I don't need much more inspiration than that. I don't know how you feel about this, but I cut up vintage. Which is not to say that I don't love it because I emphatically do. Some people would never ever cut up vintage; but I think that if I can make something wonderful out of it, something that someone will use and love, that's better than having an intact piece that's stashed away in a drawer for noone to enjoy. Plus, I usually buy things that have been ripped and stained and forgotten - my favorite!

2. What is your most treasured item in your home? Good question. I'm sure I'm overthinking it. But it reminds me of this story a friend told me (go ahead and make yourself a snack and come back, I'll wait). Her aunt was evacuated from her home during the Oakland hills fire and the firefighters gave her five minutes to grab what she could and get out. She took her grandmother's mink coat and a bottle of vodka. The coat because she knew she'd never have one again and the vodka because she might need the company. Sorry, that totally does not answer your question, does it?
I have a vintage dress form that I adore
http://bananasaurusrex.blogspot.com/2010/12/meet-lillian.html There are some painted rocks and notes from my children and photos of my grandparents that cannot be replaced. But as far as an item most treasured - I have this pincushion that I love and use everyday. It's felted wool and big and funky and my handsome husband bought it for me. It serves me well. (see photo below.)

3.What is your favorite comfort food? Bread. No, pasta. No. Bread. Bread, cheese and tomato is my favorite lunch. If you have basil and balsamic, I'll follow you anywhere.

4. When did you realize that you were an artist? I haven't yet. That's partly insecurity and partly the training and practice of graphic design. As a designer, I tended to view the creative process as more of a "process" than an art form. That and ten years of clients telling you to make their logo bigger, will pretty much crush any fantasy you might have that you're an "artiste." (Hi Clients! Love you!)

5. Best advice you ever received? Just keep swimming. Yes, I received this advice from an animated fish but I don't think that makes it any less useful.

6. Your best advice to an aspiring artist? I read the best thing on Scoutie Girl yesterday....
Laura Simms says: "You will find the limit of what works for you once you've passed over it." And I think that's so true. Choosing to be an artist is not choosing a comfortable, emotional life. It's choosing to make mistakes and push things a little too far and live in kind of an imperfect, honest place.

7. What is one thing people would not know about you? I can't spell and I'm a control freak. No, everyone knows that. I tend to get obsessed with subjects I have no hope of understanding. Like when I decided I just Had to become a forensic accountant. Right now I'm haunted by the theory of relativity. It's ridiculous.

8. Are you a Lover of Vintage? Emphatically, yes.

9. Where can we find you next? You can almost always find me at my house, folding laundry. BananaSaurus Rex will be at the Livermore Farmers' Market on June 16th, and hopefully a few more venues around the Bay Area this summer and fall. And there's my blog where I wax rhapsodic about making things, housework, the meaning of life, and the increasing difficulty I have figuring out what to wear. (segue!)

10. What is your favorite thing to wear? Havaianas, like such:
Super simple and comfy - and if I have them on, it must be summer.

  1. Thanks for introducing me! I'm off to check Ms. Bananasaurusrex out (more fun to say than type!) since she's near my 'hood.

  2. I thought nothin' could be better than the name Bananasaurusrex-and then I kept reading! What a fantastic feature!
