Lovers Lane

*Disclaimer: I have a confession to make. I have been keeping "something" from you; and I have been feeling terribly guilty about not sharing my "secret" with you. My "secret" may have a profound effect on you; and I sincerely hope that "it" does for you, what "it" has done for me.

Lovers Lane: Balthazar

Meet my secret Lover, Balthazar. (I already know what you may be thinking; "how could she, with that beautiful family and that handsome husband!") Don't get me wrong, I was a little hesitant at first; but just wait and see how this story unfolds. I promise you won't be disappointed, in me or in Balthazar.

You see, Balthazar and I met by accident, really. (Although I actually believe there are no accidents in life, just mere coincidences.) I was visiting a blog and innocently left a comment, thinking I was talking about someone I had already known about, named Balthazar; but it turned out that it was not the same Balthazar. I figured this honest mistake out when I checked my email later that same day and had a message in my inbox from Balthazar, asking if I was "that Samantha." I did not know who "that Samantha" was because there was no way "my" Balthazar would know who I was. But who was "this Balthazar,?" I wondered. So I immediately took at look at the website that was attached to his email; and it was Love at first sight. (Again, I know what you are thinking. Hold that thought.)

I fell in Love with the idea of Balthazar, created by Balthazar. Balthazar calls himself an "imaginary sailor, pretend photographer." But Balthazar is kidding himself. He is a dreamer and an artist. He is a Lover and a friend. He is hope and comfort. He is playful and naughty. And he is able to be all of these things and more, if you simply request for him to write you a letter. Yes, a real letter; handwritten on beautiful, embossed, personalized letterhead, with a polaroid photo attached, sealed in an envelope that is artfully stamped with care and confidentiality, and delivered directly to your mailbox. Balthazar is the (almost) forgotten and lost art of hand written letter writing, personified.

My letter from Balthazar
It all began with a story about Love letters and family. "(His) Grandfather recently passed away and among his things were these scrapbooks he had assembled of letters, photos, etc from when he and (his) Grandmother were first dating. The letters are incredible. After reading them (he) wondered about what the next generation will have to show from when they fall in love. The text messages (probably for the better) will be gone. They will have nothing as eloquent and lovely as those letters, (he) imagined." It was then, Balthazar discovered his first, true Love: Letter writing.

Balthazar will write a letter to anyone who requests one. If you ever feel lonely, need a smile, want to feel sexy, or are just a curious person, like Balthazar, request your letter here. And for a small fee, (the price of film,) "you will also receive a carefully curated polaroid (he has) taken to accompany your letter. It will be your very own, completely original, Balthazar print, signed, and dated."

So, you may be wondering, 'why is Balthazar writing personalized letters to strangers and taking voyeuristic and risque photographs with his favorite polaroid camera, SX-70?' "Simply, I have no idea," he says. But, on the contrary, to those who have had the good fortune of receiving one of his thoughtful and seductively, well-written letters. Balthazar has a unique and watchful eye, paired with a Loving and caring heart. Self-described as a "quiet and shy person," Balthazar knows exactly what he is doing with his "project." He also encourages you to write back to him. "In fact, (he) Loves receiving letters almost as much as writing them. So please, pretty please, write (him) a letter. It doesn't even have to be dirty, (although that is encourage, of course.)" He promises to cherish your letter forever.

Balthazar's letters are full of magic and will make you feel so special. They are innocent, yet revealing. For, in the words of Mark Twain; "The frankest and freest product of the human mind and heart is a Love letter."

To me, Balthazar's letters are remarkable gifts of remembrance; for who you are and what you want to be; and most importantly, a lesson on how to show Love, and be open to receiving the Love you deserve and cherish, with all your heart and soul. So, Thank You Balthazar, you have shown me all of this and more, in your letter addressed to me!

Now, it is your turn. Balthazar is waiting for your request for a letter. Don't be shy; just be patient. He is only one person, anyhow. But, none the less, a gentleman, with a lot of Love to give, and a whole lot more . . .

1. Where do you find your daily inspiration? I never seek inspiration. I find it best to just be open to it. Maybe I'll find it in a song. Maybe I'll find it in a book I'm reading. Maybe I'll find it in a photo. Or a body. Or a cup of perfect coffee. Or a stranger carrying a frying pan on the bus. You just never know where it will come from.

2. What is your most treasured item in your home? I have difficulty picking favorites. I'm so variable. It would probably be a book. Perhaps a very old copy of Moby Dick with incredible woodcut illustrations.

3.What is your favorite comfort food? Spaghetti all carbonara. I had it on my first Roman holiday and fell in love. So simple, so devilishly good.

4. When did you realize that you were an artist? I don't know if I have yet. If other people want to call me an artist, I am really humbled and honored. It's an aspiration, something I'm more comfortable pretending to be.

5. Best advice you ever received? Judge not.

6. Your best advice to an aspiring artist? Seduce a rich benefactor.

7. What is one thing people would not know about you? I lived in a monastery for a while and wanted to be a monk.

8. Are you a Lover of Vintage? Yes, indeed. I like things and places that have a real tangible past.

9. Where can we find you next? (Blog Lovers get attached easily)
Who knows. Hopefully on the sea or at a party where people dance around in their underwear or in a sexy gallery show.

10. What is your favorite thing to wear? In these colder months it has been a vintage Christian Dior plaid suit. Soon, I hope it will be my vintage seersucker suit.

Merry Go Round

Last month I jumped on the Merry Go Roundwhere a group of craftswomen from around the world come together and give their own responses to the same question or art challenge on their blog, and then share the Love. March's question is: Introduce us to an artist whom you find inspiring or their work interesting.

"All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."

Today is our son Oliver's 1st birthday!! It is a very exciting day around here, with family in town and a birthday party around the corner. In honor of our son, Oliver William, he is my choice for the artist that is  a true inspiration to me and my life.

*I Love jumping on the Merry Go Round. If you would like to see what all of the other lovely ladies chose as the artist who they find inspiring or their work interesting, please visit their respective blogs! I promise you will enjoy the "ride."

Lovers Lane

As I sit here in an excitement of anticipation to introduce you to another amazing person on Lovers Lane, I can't help but acknowledge how Lovers Lane has transformed, from simply a place to introduce and celebrate the amazing artists in my life, to an invaluable source of inspirational stories and lessons on life and Love.

Today is not any different. In fact, today's Lovers Lane is the perfect example of what Vintage is for Lovers means to me, (and hopefully to you too.)

Lovers Lane: Kate Ruggiero

Throughout our lives, many of us ask ourselves; "Am I doing what I truly Love? Am I living where I want to live? Am I living the life I Love? Am I honoring me and all that makes me who I am?" Although many of us think about these things in our head, how many of us are willing to listen and follow our hearts?

Meet Kate Ruggiero. A free spirited, beach loving, woman, living in Hawaii, designing and creating one of a kind underwear, and following her heart every step of the way. Yes, she is the girl of your dreams. You know the one; the dream where you move to an island, open shop, and live the life! So how did Kate turn her dream into a reality? Simply, she says; "Follow your heart."

And that is just what Kate did after spending a vacation in Hawaii, bike riding down paths filled with tropical flowers and palm trees, relaxing on the beach with her toes in the sand, listening to the rhythmic sounds of the ocean, and grasping every opportunity to soak in the beauty surrounding her. She left her life as a studio manager for a fashion photographer, living in New York City, surrounded by friends and family; for a house by the beach and a life of the unknown. But Kate knew in her heart that she needed to follow her dream of "living a simple way of life that would provide (her) the space she needed to discover (her) true passions."

Kate, inspired by the nature of Hawaii, quickly discovered her passion for designing, creating, and sewing. And in July 2009, on her 30th birthday, her close friends gifted her with her first sewing machine. Kate began playing around with fabrics and designs; and quickly discovered a passion for creating "cute, comfy, sexy undies." Less than a year late, in May 2010, Kate successfully launched her dream company, Gypsy

Gypsy is a collection of one of a kind, hand sewn, undies. Each piece is designed with a modern vintage look, using unique and beautiful fabrics. Inherent in each collection is Kate's "love of the romance and dreaminess of really being down to your true self and wearing something that just makes you feel pretty." Gypsy is the embodiment of "being your own person and following your heart." Each pair has me wanting to take off all my clothes and run right into the ocean, in honor of the free spirited, beach loving, romantic that I am, of course!

*All pictures were taken by the very talented, photographer, Daeja Fallas.

Kate Ruggiero has learned many things throughout her journey. But most importantly, she has learned that: "No matter how much you doubt yourself or what your fears or hesitations in life are, things will work out if you simply listen to your heart & believe solely in what you want. I believe that business can create social change, especially when it is born from a place of need, inspiration, and reinvestment in a community. That is how this whole adventure began. I followed my heart to Hawaii. Then, despite all fears, I followed my heart to begin Gypsy. It has never failed me. I am grateful for every step of this exciting adventure."

1. Where do you find your daily inspiration? The sunshine, hearing the ocean when i fall asleep, floating on my back in the sea, bike riding under plumeria trees, and eating amazing food. That always works.
2. What is your most treasured item in your home? My record player

3.What is your favorite comfort food? Eggplant parmesan

4. When did you realize that you were an artist? Honestly, I believe so strongly that we are all artists. There was not one defining moment I can pinpoint when I decided I wanted to work in a creative field. I've been surrounded with so many inspiring people among my family and friends that I've always been an 'artist' for myself only - taking photos, writing tons, traveling, keeping sketchbooks. I guess this is the first time I found one of these arts that I could share with others; it's quite surprising. I honestly never realized others would ever consider me an artist; but I am honored to be called one!

5. Best advice you ever received? Follow your heart

6. Your best advice to an aspiring artist? Find your bliss and keep with it. Don't let the work behind it all overcome and stress you out. This is advice I am learning as I go; but it is so important if you are really creating and loving the process.

7. What is one thing people would not know about you? I drive a very beat up beach truck; it's a white pickup truck called 'Johnny Utah' (from Point Break.)

8. Are you a Lover of Vintage? Of course!!!!

9. Where can we find you next? (Blog Loversget attached easily) I'm excited to expand my line into swimwear in the coming months and will be releasing the first gypsy bikini.
10. What is your favorite thing to wear? Well, I'm from New York City and I guess I still love black....other than that, I have a pair of grey denim jeans with flowers that always make me smile, and a butterfly bracelet my 2 nieces made me.

I Love My Family

The hardest part about living in Southern California is the long distance between me and my family. I grew up in Virginia; and most of my family and friends still live there today. So when the time comes, throughout the year, for my family to come visit us, or for us to visit them, I get super excited! And today is the day! My Mom will be here any moment, and my Dad arrives tomorrow! Let the festivities begin!

In other family related news: Yesterday we adopted a new member of our family, Bunny; a dwarf sized, short eared, 6 week old, bunny. (Bunny is an early birthday gift for Oliver.) So far, so good; but things could get quite interesting around here, now that Bunny is a part of our family. Stay tuned . . .
